Rangers shortstop Corey Seager provided an update on his recent surgery to repair a sports hernia.
Seager said Monday at spring training in Surprise that he wasn't sure if he'd be ready for Opening Day and didn't want to know the exact timeline for his recovery.
“It makes it easier. If they gave me a specific day, then, Iike, I’m 100% going to be ready on that day," Seager said, via Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News. "And if I’m not, then it’s going to be aggravating. When they tell me I can do something, then I’m going to try to do it the best I can. I mean, I’m antsy now.”
The original timeline for Seager's return was set at six to 12 weeks. The shortstop is now three weeks removed from the procedure and Opening Day is five weeks away.
Seager said he suffered the injury at some point last season and played through the postseason despite it. He was told the injury should heal with rest but was advised to undergo surgery after he didn't recover.
Seager appeared frustrated by how the situation unfolded, but as Grant wrote in his column, 'surgery is always considered a last option rather than a first.'
“It’s just really unfortunate,” Seager said. “Partially a little bit of my mine, too, right? I was thinking it’s going to heal eventually, and it just didn’t. I’m definitely not happy with the situation. All I can do is get healthy, try not to get antsy and get ready as soon as possible.”
