DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys have reportedly made a shocking personnel move on Tuesday night, releasing former second-round linebacker pick, Jaylon Smith.

Smith, who was named a captain for Sunday's win over the the Carolina Panthers, is on a fully guaranteed deal worth $7.62 million for 2021.

The Cowboys had reportedly attempted to trade Smith, but were unsuccessful, prompting his release.

Had the Cowboys elected to hold on to the fifth-year linebacker, he would have been set to earn $9.2 million in the 2022 season.

That all changed this season, however, with the Cowboys electing to draft multiple linebackers in the 2021 NFL Draft, as well as signing free agent linebacker, Keanu Neal.

As a result, Smith has started just two of four games for the Cowboys, making 18 total stops, including just one in the team's win over Carolina on Sunday.
