Akins, 30, was a third-round pick of the Texans in 2018 and played 58 games in Houston. He has 114 career receptions for 1,230 yards and four touchdowns, including 24 catches for 214 yards last season.

The NFL is actually the second career pro sport for Akins, who was a third-round draft pick of the Texas Rangers in 2010 out of Union Grove HS in McDonough, Georgia. He spent four seasons in the Rangers’ system as an outfielder, reaching as high as Low-A, but hit just .2018 and left the diamond behind after 2013 to go back to school and play football for Central Florida.

Now, Akins’ addition to Big Blue continues an overhaul to their TE room, which lost Evan Engram to Jacksonville in free agency and saw both Kyle Rudolph and Kaden Smith cut in salary cap moves.

In addition to Akins, the Giants signed Ricky Seals-Jones last month and re-signed Chris Myarick, whose first career NFL catch was the only touchdown in Big Blue’s win over Philly last November, and they also have Rysen John, who spent 2021 on injured reserve, and 2021 practice squad member Jake Hausmann on the camp roster.
