(SportsRadio 610) - Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed Tuesday the team is meeting with Alabama quarterback prospect Bryce Young this week. This comes the week after they met with Ohio State quarterback prospect C.J. Stroud.
Houston picks No. 2 in the NFL Draft this month with at least one of those quarterbacks, widely considered to be the top two, to be available.
It largely depends on which direction the Carolina Panthers go in, since they hold the No. 1 overall pick and dictate the draft's direction.
So, what qualities from a quarterback is Ryans most impressed by with these prospects visiting the team?
“With any position, I think the quality I'm looking for is guys who are dedicated to work, guys who are dedicated to be the best at what they're doing," Ryans said. "I feel like you get guys with that right mindset, that they're truly coachable, they're accountable to their teammates. You get guys with the right mindset, guys who want to be better, it doesn’t matter what the position is, quarterback, linebacker, D-lineman. We want guys willing to be coachable, willing to work, guys who want to be the best at what they're doing."
What about whether a rookie quarterback could start for this team, or if enough pieces are surrounded to make that successful?
"With the quarterback position, it's all about the guy," Ryans said. "We talk about a rookie quarterback, a veteran quarterback, it doesn't matter. What's the makeup of the guy? Is he worthy to start for your team? That's all that matters. It doesn't matter where the guy is in his career.
"Is he a rookie, third year, fourth year? Who is the best guy, the right guy for our team? We don't know that right now. We haven't lined up and went out and practiced football at all. We'll figure that out when the time comes."
Indeed, we will.
