HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) - As a result of his hard work off the field, the Texans announced Thursday that safety Michael Thomas is their Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award nominee.

One of the NFL's highest honors, the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award goes to the player who exudes excellence both on and off of the field.

The eventual winner of the award, who will be named during Super Bowl week, will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of their choice. Moreover, each of the 32 players who have been nominated will receive a $40,000 donation to the charity of that player's choice.

In the past, Thomas, a Houston native, has been at the forefront of social justice initiatives, and this year is no different. The nine-year veteran has been out in the community advocating for social justice reform and changes in education.

"I've always been passionate about community service, because as a kid I promised myself if I made it to the NFL I'd always give back," said Michael Thomas. "I understand the impact that we as NFL players can have on our youth, underserved communities and more. It means the world to me that I may uplift someone with my time, resources, or just my encouragement. I am blessed to give back."
