(SportsRadio 610) - The conversation around Tytus Howard's place on the Texans' offensive line appears to be settled.
It seemed that way May 2, when the team announced it would be picking up the fifth-year option for the 2019 first-round pick. Howard started eight games as a rookie for Houston. Seven of those starts were at right tackle, one of them at left guard.
He was named to the All-Rookie team for his performance at tackle.
In 2020, Howard started 14 games at that same position for Houston. Then last season, under a new management and coaching staff, Howard was moved to left guard. He did not play particularly well, and seemed to flourish when moved back to tackle as injuries and attrition took shape throughout the season.
Now, the Texans have once again reset their coaching staff, promoting defensive coordinator Lovie Smith to head coach, Pep Hamilton from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, and bringing in longtime offensive line coach George Warhop.
General manager Nick Caserio indicated last week with Payne & Pendergast there would be a good chance for Howard to return to his natural position at tackle.
In a recent interview on The Cris Collinsworth podcast, Smith was asked about rookie No. 15 overall pick Kenyon Green, who is expected to start at left guard for the Texans. That's when he revealed, rather definitively, Howard will play tackle.
"We'll keep Tytus (Howard and Laremy (Tunsil) out at the tackle position," Smith said. "And yes, Kenyon will be playing guard for us this year."
