"The NFL's got a problem where officials are getting after players," said Brian Fitzgerald, co-host of "The Thing About Sports," as he and Chad Hastings discussed recent disciplinary actions against league referees.
Co-host Chad Hastings commented on the unusual nature of the discipline. "We're suspending NFL officials for the F-bomb? Really?" Hastings said.
The conversation was sparked by recent league suspensions handed down to two game officials. Line judge Jeff Seeman received a two-game suspension after directing profanity at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during a game against the New York Giants. Referee Adrian Hill was suspended for one game following an incident in which he yelled at a Minnesota Vikings player who accidentally knocked him down.
Hastings questioned whether the league’s response was overly sensitive given the inherent intensity of professional football. He suggested that monetary fines would have been a more suitable punishment rather than benching officials, arguing that players frequently engage in heated exchanges without facing similar discipline from the league.
Beyond officiating, the hosts turned their attention to the action on the field, focusing heavily on the struggling Houston Texans. Coming off a tough loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the winless Texans sit at 0-4 and are currently in line for the top overall pick in the NFL draft if the season were to end today.
The hosts targeted the late-game clock management of Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, specifically pointing to his decision to burn all three second-half timeouts while on defense during Dallas' final drive. Hastings characterized the sequence as "coaching malpractice," noting that halting the clock gave the Cowboys additional time to compose their offense and quieted the home crowd at NRG Stadium.
Despite Houston's defensive lapses—including surrendering over 400 total yards to Dallas and committing 13 penalties—Hastings highlighted wide receiver Nico Collins as a bright spot. Collins caught seven passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns on eight targets, establishing himself as a true primary target for quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend, the hosts expressed skepticism about Houston's chances as they travel to face the 0-4 Tennessee Titans, warning that a loss could signal complete disaster for the franchise. They also previewed key matchups across the league, highlighting the undefeated San Francisco 49ers visiting the Seattle Seahawks, the Minnesota Vikings facing the New Orleans Saints, and an AFC showdown between the Oakland Raiders and the New England Patriots.
