AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The Westlake Chaps will be practicing on Thanksgiving week for the 10th consecutive year - after advancing to the third round of the Texas high school football playoffs Friday night by defeating San Antonio Brennan 24-7.
A strong defensive showing again helped the Chaps contain the Bears, who had scored at least 38 points in eight straight games this season and averaged more than 400 yards of offense. Friday night, the Bears only managed four first downs, 27 yards rushing, and less than 130 total yards.
Senior linebacker Elliot Schaper led the defensive effort for the Chaps, including a crucial fourth quarter interception. A blocked punt by Hayes Brodhead set up the Chaps' first score, setting up a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Westlake will be right back at Burger Stadium in southwest Austin again next week, after Buda Johnson defeated Los Fresnos Saturday afternoon at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
That third-round matchup between the Chaps and the Jaguars will kick off Friday afternoon, Nov. 29, at 1 p.m.
“We’ll be having Thanksgiving together again,” Chaps head coach Tony Salazar said postgame. “What a special occasion. I couldn’t be more proud of our players and coaches.”
