AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The 12th-ranked Westlake Chaparrals cruised to a 48-7 victory over Bowie on Friday night in District 26-6A action, moving to 3-0 in district play and setting up next week's pivotal Battle of the Lakes against Lake Travis - a matchup that will likely decide the District 26-6A title.
Despite a slow start, the Chaparrals' offense exploded in the second quarter, awakened by a Brandon Clark interception return for a touchdown. The Chaparrals continued to control the game in the second half, extending their advantage with efficient offensive play.
“It was a great result and our offense did some good things in the second half,” Chaps head coach Tony Salazar said postgame. “Our defense held a good football team to seven points, so we’ll take that any day.”
Bowie managed to score a touchdown in the third quarter, but otherwise was stifled by the Chaps' swarming defense.
The victory sets up a highly anticipated matchup against Lake Travis next week. The Cavaliers are currently ranked 6th in Class 6A; Lake Travis defeated Dripping Springs 49-21 Friday night to stay undefeated on the season. With Westlake and Lake Travis tied atop the 26-6A standings, next week's matchup will likely decide who wins the district title.
