BELTON, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- Fourth-ranked Westlake secured a thrilling 35-14 victory over No. 15 Prosper in their season opener Thursday night, despite a tightly contested first half.

The Chaps and Eagles opened their 2024 campaigns on neutral turf at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton; Prosper jumped out to a 14-13 lead at halftime, as Eagles quarterback Braeden Imhoff connected with Dallas Boozer and Lathon Latiolais for touchdowns.

Westlake's defense tightened in the second half, shutting out the Eagles. Junior quarterback Rees Wise finished the night throwing for four touchdowns, including three to Brody Wilhelm.

A fourth quarter score from Justice Johnson from one yard out stretched the Chaps' lead to 28-14 late.

"We just kind of finally got consecutive drives together... a good stop by the defense, followed by a touchdown drive on offense, stacking together those consecutive drives, that's how we were kind of able to pull away in the second half," said Chaps head coach Tony Salazar.

Westlake (1-0) will open up at home next week against San Benito, Friday night Sept. 6 at 7pm; Prosper (0-1) will host Rockwall-Heath.
