SCHERTZ, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- Following their first regular season home loss since 2018, the Westlake Chaparrals bounced back Friday night with a resounding 41-16 victory on the road at Cibolo Steele in the Chaps' final game before district play.
The first quarter saw the game's momentum clearly resting with the Knights, who were able to jump out to a 10-3 lead on a 75-yard run from Jonathan Hatton - before a Westlake interception by Thompson Bennett flipped the script.
That crucial turnover led Westlake (3-1) to score on their next two possessions, pushing to a 20-10 halftime lead and 31 unanswered points for the Chaps.
The resounding win was a return to form for the Chaps, who suffered their first regular season home loss last week against Humble Atascocita, falling 39-21. That loss dropped Westlake in the 6A statewide rankings, from number 4 to number 14.
“I’m just glad we finished,” Chaps head coach Tony Salazar said postgame. “Our boys showed up to work on Monday ready to fix their wrongs, and boy, did they play their butts off. It wasn’t perfect, but they weren’t leaving this field without a win.”
Quarterback Rees Wise had two rushing touchdowns along with a strike through the air to Brody Wilhelm for 11 yards; Grady Bartlett also ran it in twice with two field goals from Nolan Bartley to round out the Chaps' scoring.
Westlake has a bye next week, ahead of the beginning of District 26-6A play with a Thursday night tilt against the Akins Eagles on Oct. 3. Steele (3-1) will open district play next week against Schertz Clemens.
