Is age just a number?

A 57-year-old gave birth to her son, a healthy baby boy. Barbara Higgins, a teacher in New Hampshire, named her new bundle of joy Jack at Concord Hospital after being in labor for three hours, according to Today.

Higgins explained how her good genes helped her in having a smooth third pregnancy.

“We live to be 100, we climb mountains, and ski well into our 90s,” Higgins said.

The New Hampshire resident is a big fan of fitness and says that it is a great way to stay fit and young. She said she was lifting weights until the day she gave birth to her son.

“I do a lot of weight training and all that crazy Crossfit stuff that you hear about,” Higgins said.

Tragedy struck Higgins’s family in 2016 when she and her husband, Kenny, lost their daughter.

“Molly was 13 (and she) had an undiagnosed brain tumor and died very suddenly,” she said. “That throws your life into a tailspin of feelings and experiences that you weren’t expecting.”

While Higgins experienced grief, she wondered if she could ever get pregnant again.

“I started having these dreams that I wanted to have a child — and I thought, ‘OK Barb, that’s a little crazy,’” Higgins added.

Her husband was very supportive after Higgins visited an IVF clinic to assess her options.

“We’ve beaten the odds and I’m so proud of her,” Kenny Banzhoff said. “She’s been a trooper through the whole thing.”

Higgins hopes her decision inspires women struggling to get pregnant that it doesn’t matter how old you are.
