Black Women Gather Virtually to Process COVID-19, Unrest

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A group of Black women have come together to create a first-of-its-kind conference designed to help women begin to deal with the aftermath of the stress and damage caused by these unprecedented times.

"The intention was to create something that would empower Black women, a place that they would be safe to express their feelings, a place where they could learn and be educated," said Angela Mitchell, one of the co-founders of the inaugural Sisters in Transformation Conference.

Molded from an idea created by Kenya Pernell, fellow co-founder Terry Stigler said their goal was to design a special "sisterhood" where women could keep it real.

Many Black women have been disproportionately impacted economically, physically and spiritually by the pandemic and also have to process recent unrest, gun violence and deaths of family and friends because of COVID-19. The conference will be a virtual gathering where Black women can come and deal with the issues left behind.

"There's mental issues that nobody wants to talk about," says Stigler. "There's fitness issues, we need to take care of ourselves, financial issues. We want to address it, give people a how to, because we want to fix it."
