California Coronavirus Death Toll Surpasses 10,000

The California Department of Public Health has announced an additional 142 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the state's total to more than 10,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

According to state data released Friday, 10,011 people have died from COVID-19. Public health officials reported 8,436 new coronavirus cases in the same time frame, pushing the total number of confirmed cases to 538,416.

Since then, the virus has moved through nursing homesprisonschuches and workplaces with remarkable speed. The deadly nature of the pandemic has also hampered the state's economy, forcing Gov. Gavin Newsom to issue a statewide shelter-in-place, close specific businesses and force individual counties to pull back on reopening plans as the virus surged.
