A couple in St. Petersburg, Florida raised $20,000 for face masks for their community.

Even after making the donation, Trevor Burgess and his husband, Gary Hess, told Good Morning America that they wanted to do more to help.

The married couple got their neighborhood involved and created the Masks for St. Pete fundraiser. Both Burgess and Hess raised money and have given out over 20,000 masks with help from officials in St. Petersburg.

"The second batch of 10,000 masks has arrived and will be distributed shortly!" Burgess wrote in a June 30th Facebook post. "Thanks to the 118 members of our community who donated to make this a reality for the City of St. Petersburg, Florida."

He added: "The third batch of 10,000 is a few weeks out."

The couple plans to do more by involving their community in future fundraising efforts.

With many people urging others to wear face masks, it was previously reported that Florida had surpassed New York state in its total number of coronavirus cases in July.

Florida is a current hot spot for the virus in the United States.

As of Wednesday, Florida has recorded 502,739 positive cases of COVID-19, with at least 7,627 deaths, reported the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has attributed the spike in coronavirus cases to a younger generation. "If you look at the 25 to 34 age group, that is now by far the leading age group for positive tests," he said.
