The list of hand sanitizers that have been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration is growing.
The FDA is now warning about the use of more toxic hand sanitizers.
There are four more hand sanitizers that have been made by La Loma, Tlalnepantla, Mexico, Real Clean Distribuciones SA de CV, which "...is voluntarily recalling all lots it manufactured within expiry of the following brand names of hand sanitizers."
According to the FDA website, these are the four brands:
Born Basic ANTI-BAC HAND SANITIZER,
Scent Theory KEEP CLEAN Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer,
Scent Theory KEEP IT CLEAN Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer, and
Lux Eoi Hand Sanitizing Gel to the consumer level.
The products are being recalled due to the potential presence of methanol (wood alcohol).
Last month, the list got longer - the FDA warned that there are hand sanitizers that have tested positive for methanol contamination, according to the FDA website.
There are at least 75 hand sanitizers that are being recalled and are also being sold at national retail locations including Walmart and Costco, according to an NBC story Wednesday.
"FDA is warning consumers and health care providers that the agency has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol contamination. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested," the FDA website says.
The FDA website says "Methanol is not an acceptable active ingredient for hand sanitizers and must not be used due to its toxic effects. FDA’s investigation of methanol in certain hand sanitizers is ongoing. The agency will provide additional information as it becomes available."
In the past, FDA expanded to 59 its list of sanitizers to steer clear of — some of which have already been recalled and some the FDA is recommending be recalled — for containing the potentially fatal substance, also known as wood alcohol.
"The agency is aware of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events including blindness, hospitalizations, and death," the FDA stated.
In a statement from the FDA, "substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death."
