(610 Sports) The Chiefs have locked up another core player with a big-time contract.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chiefs and star DT Chris Jones have agreed on a four-year deal worth $85 million with $60 million in guarantees.
Jones, a second-round draft pick out of Mississippi State, has been the anchor of the Chiefs' defensive line since he was drafted in 2016. Jones has one of the best bull rushes in all of football, allowing him to rack up 33 sacks since entering the league, tallying 15.5 of those in 2018.
Jones was franchise tagged by the team in March and was set to make $16.1 million under the non-exclusive franchise tag but had yet to sign his tender. The defending Super Bowl Champs signed quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a 10-year $503 million dollar extension last week, ensuring they will have their offensive and defensive anchors for at least the next four seasons.
Though both contracts are pricey, Spotrac details that the deal with Mahomes in no way hindered Kansas City's ability to sign Jones.
The massive signing of Patrick Mahomes had no cap-impact on the #Chiefs ability to sign Chris Jones. Mahomes added $30k of cap in 2020, and decreased his 2021 cap hit by $30k. Mahomes ($63M) & Jones ($37M) just cost KC $100M of upfront guaranteed cash though.
