After refusing to serve a customer who wouldn't wear a mask, one Starbucks employee is raking in the big bucks from Starbucks fans who support his decision.
A GoFundMe page was set up for Lenin Gutierrez in San Diego has garnered roughly $21,029 from 2,000 donors as of Thursday. The fundraiser description lauds Gutierrez's efforts to stand up to a "Karen."
"Raising money for Lenin for his honorable effort standing his ground when faced with a Karen in the wild," the description reads. Karen has been used widely on the internet to describe a typically white, middle-aged woman who uses her privilege for personal gain.
The fundraiser was started by Matt Cowan of Irvine, California in an effort to raise awareness for an honorable Starbucks employee.
"I set it at $1,000, thinking that was a reach and we would be lucky if we hit like $250," Cowan told KGTV. "And when we hit $100, I was overwhelmed by that."
He continued, "It just goes to show you there are a lot of good people out there, and that outweighs the bad."
Amber Gilles, the "Karen" in question, shared her Starbucks experience to Facebook on Monday, detailing her visit. "Meet lenen from Starbucks who refused to serve me cause I'm not wearing a mask," she wrote. "Next time I will wait for cops and bring a medical exemption."
