USPS to Pause Mail Collection Box Removal

A public outcry ensued after many across the country took notice of mail collection boxes being removed from their towns. In response to growing public concerns, the USPS has agreed to stop this removal process until after the 2020 election.

According to CNN, the Postal Service had started to reduce hours and remove mail collection boxes in many states but will now be holding these operations until November 3.

"Given the recent customer concerns the Postal Service will postpone removing boxes for a period of 90 days while we evaluate our customers' concerns," USPS spokeswoman Kim Frum said in a statement.

"Based on the density testing, boxes are identified for potential removal and notices are placed on boxes to give customers an opportunity to comment before the removal decision is made," she continued.

"This process is one of the many ways the Postal Service makes adjustments to our infrastructure to match our resources to declining mail volumes," she said.

The removal of mailboxes comes as Donald Trump has openly stated that the USPS wouldn't be able to accommodate the expected volume of mail-in voting requests in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, leaving voters concerned about the removal of receptacles.

USPS has denied these claims, saying, "The Postal Service has ample capacity to adjust our nationwide processing and delivery network to meet projected Election and Political Mail volume, including any additional volume that may result as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic."

Many have criticized Trump's negative remarks about the post office, including stars like Taylor Swift and Jason Mraz as well as the likes of Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

The removal hold on mail collection receptacles applies to 16 states:• Alaska• Arizona• Colorado• Idaho• Iowa• Kansas• Montana• Nebraska• Nevada• New Mexico• North Dakota• Oregon• South Dakota• Utah• Washington• Wyoming
