Kansas City, MO - Thanksgiving is days away and some may be bringing more than a side dish to their family gatherings – they may be carrying a load of anxiety.
"There is a lot of excitement and there's a lot of anxiety," says Dr. Jessica Hamilton, psychologist with University of Kansas Health System.
A couple of factors may be driving that anxiety, says Hamilton. Not seeing family for a long time, and worried about being around those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19.
Hamilton said one easy way to bring the stress level down is to ensure everyone in the house is vaccinated and those eligible have their booster shots.
"Whether or not they should have family members fly into town, there has some breakthrough cases," said Hamilton.
Hamilton said one way to build yourself up to the big Thanksgiving day is to take baby steps.
"Expose yourself to some of those social environments, instead of going into a larger setting," said Hamilton.
And what about a bit of alcohol to ease the tension? Hamilton suggested you do not go that route.
"Substituting alcohol with anxiety reduction is not helpful and it can have a harmful effect," said Hamilton.
