Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Chiefs cut it close this week.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, more than 20 players – including Patrick Mahomes – were scheduled on Sunday to get a haircut with a team barber who tested positive for COVID.
The Chiefs pulled the barber, mid-cut, when they learned of his positive result.
Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, the team stopped the barber shortly after he began an 8 a.m. appointment with center Daniel Kilgore.
On Tuesday, Kilgore and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson were both placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list after being deemed close contacts with a confirmed positive.
Because Kilgore and Robinson are considered close contacts, they are still eligible to play in the Super Bowl Sunday if they continue to produce negative test results.
Yet, the idea that about one-third of the team, including its star player, could have been put in jeopardy for the Super Bowl would have created an absolute nightmare scenario for the NFL.
The league has had some hiccups over the season with rescheduling games, but everything has gone rather smoothly since the start of the playoffs.
Players have been following strict COVID protocols, and Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill even said earlier this week that the team barbers had all been tested for COVID.
Per NFL.com, the barber had tested negative five consecutive days before he was allowed to enter the Chiefs’ facility – where the team will be practicing until Saturday.
He was reportedly wearing double PPE while cutting Kilgore’s hair.
Players are being tested twice daily ahead of Super Bowl LV and neither team has produced a positive test in more than a week.
Kilgore at least seems to be having some fun with it.
