One-year-old child dead in Wichita shooting, father arrested

KANSAS CITY - Wichita Police arrested the father of a 1-year-old girl who died after being shot Friday night.

Sedgwick County booking reports identify the suspect as Michael Tejeda. He was arrested on charges of felony murder, aggravated child endangerment, and felon in possession of a firearm.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., in the 2200 block of South Santa Fe, near Pawnee and Broadway. The toddler had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and died at a local hospital around an hour later.

Our news partners at KSN report another child who was in the home at the time of the incident was placed in Police protective custody. The child’s mother was interviewed and later released.

Police have not released the name of the child.

Original story: A one-year-old child was killed in a shooting in south Wichita Friday night.

Emergency crews were called around 8:30 p.m. to a home in the 2200 block of South Santa Fe, near Pawnee and Broadway. Arriving officers found the toddler with a gunshot wound to the upper body. The child was rushed to a local hospital but died around an hour later.

Wichita Police are investigating the case but haven't determined whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.
