KANSAS CITY - A mill levy reduction could be in the works in the city of Wichita's 2026 operating budget.
The city's general fund was projected to be short by $2 million next year but proposed adjustments and higher property tax revenue from the county puts the general fund in the black.
As a result, the city could potentially lower the mill levy for the first time in over 30 years, by half a mill.
Council member Brandon Johnson, who has argued for increasing the city's mill levy, is not in favor of a cut.
The city says for a $260 thousand home, their property tax would be around $15 lower. The council plans future discussions regarding potential adjustments to local sales and property taxes.
The proposed 2026 operating budget will be presented on July 15. The public will have 4 opportunities to comment, including an evening meeting on August 7. The budget will be adopted August 26.
