KANSAS CITY - The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department confirms that a man shot and killed his mother-in-law near Derby.

Sharmaine Burke, 49, called 911 dispatchers just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night when her son-in-law, 29, pointed a gun at her.  While on the phone, dispatchers heard three gunshots.  She died at the scene.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says the woman's grandson, 8, was in the home at the time of the shooting, but both father and son were gone when deputies arrived.

The suspects' vehicle was found in Butler County around 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning and he was taken into custody without incident, and now faces charges of first-degree murder and child endangerment.

The boy was found safe and has been placed in protective custody.
