The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a deadly crash early Monday morning to the west-southwest of Maize.
After 1:30 a.m., deputies, along with Maize and Colwich Police officers, responded to an Apple crash-alert near 45th Street North & 135th Street West. A Maize police officer arrived, finding a Pontiac G6 had hit a tree and was on fire.
Colwich firefighters located one person inside the vehicle, who had died at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate the Pontiac was traveling west on 45th Street. Just west of 135th, the road transitions from pavement to gravel, and investigators believe the driver lost control on the rocky surface and hit the tree.
The county Coroner’s Office is working to confirm the driver’s identity.
