Kansas City, MO – When you click, "like", or watch something online or on an app, there's typically computer code that tracks that. Algorithms then try to give you more of what you want. Media literacy expert Julie Smith says sites gain revenue by holding our attention. "The algorithms tell the site or app what will most likely keep us on longer."

The Pew Research Center has highlighted the pros and cons of algorithms, "Algorithms are often elegant and incredibly useful tools used to accomplish tasks. They are mostly invisible aids, augmenting human lives in increasingly incredible ways. However, sometimes the application of algorithms created with good intentions leads to unintended consequences." One example offered by Pew was in 2016 when currency trades triggered by algorithms, caused the British pound to drop in value.
While Pew notes that algorithms can increase efficiency, experts say the codes can also perpetuate bias and create filter bubbles.
