KANSAS CITY – Electric vehicle drivers in Kansas could start paying more in fees if a bill introduced in the legislature wins approval.
House Bill 2121 aims to increase fees on drivers of electric and also hybrid vehicles. It would come in the form of a higher licensing fee as you renew your license plates each year.
The money would be used to pay for highways and roads in Kansas, which currently comes largely from gas and oil taxes. This because as more and more people make the switch to electric vehicles, that fund does not have as much money coming in.
For hybrid vehicles, the yearly fees would double, from $50 to $100. For fully electric, the fees would go from $100 to $175.
Studies also suggest that EV’s are harder on roads as they, on average, weigh more than gas powered vehicles.
