KANSAS CITY – Local authorities say a man searching for deer antler sheds discovered a human skeleton in the woods near Humboldt in southeast Kansas.

The man contacted the Allen County Sheriff's Office to let them know of his find, who then contacted the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for assistance, according to a press release.

"On Saturday, March 18, at around 5:50 p.m., the Allen County Sheriff's Office requested KBI assistance with the investigation. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene," the KBI shared in a statement. "Upon arrival, they found human skeletal remains."

An autopsy was scheduled to help determine how the person died, and investigators have yet to determine the identity due to the conditions of the remains.

"Positive identification is expected to take longer than typical cases due to the condition of the remains," the agency said. "Death investigations may be determined to be the result of homicide, suicide, natural causes, or an accident. No threat to the public exists related to this incident."

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME or the Allen County Sheriff's Office at (620) 365-1400.
