KANSAS CITY – First responders in Liberty made a desperate rescue of a woman and her baby from an icy creek this week.

Tuesday morning an SUV was involved in a rollover crash, with the vehicle going off the road and down into an icy creek, according to the Liberty Police Department. The vehicle landed on its driver's side - trapping a woman and her six-month-old baby inside.

A police officer attempted to reach the SUV and fell through the ice up to his waist in the cold water. He continued on and used a tool to break through the windshield to pull the woman out.

Firefighters on scene helped remove the rest of the windshield, and the officer crawled into the SUV, into the back seat to rescue the baby which was still strapped into its car seat. The seat installed on the passenger side in the back.

Both the woman and her baby were taken to a hospital by ambulance for treatment.
The police officer went to the hospital as well due to their prolonged exposure to the frigid water.
