Today is National Chicken Wing Day and that means there are deals all over the place on the beloved fried chicken dish. Audacy scoped out some of those deals for you.
While deep fried chicken wings have been a staple of Southern U.S. cooking for a long time, the history of the now well-known hot sauce-tossed Buffalo wings is a bit more recent. According to the National Chicken Council, “the concept of cooking wings in peppery hot sauce was born in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, N.Y, when co-owner Teressa Bellissimo cooked leftover wings in hot sauce as a late-night snack for her son and his friends.”
By the next day, the wings were on the menu, and they became a big hit. In 1977, the city of Buffalo declared July 29 to be National Chicken Wing Day, per the National Day Calendar. Since that fateful night there in 1964, Buffalo wings have landed on menus worldwide. According to YouGov polling, they are the 16th most popular American dish and the National Chicken Council said it expected people to eat more than 1 billion wings this year while watching the Super Bowl.
