Mysterious 'flying triangle' sighting leads new government release of UFO documents

What is the scariest horror movie? Plus, AI submits a fake tip to police and a new bigfoot controversy

UFO hunters have a new case to look into.

A new tranche of documents released by the U.S. Department of War includes an account from this year of federal agents who say they witnessed a mysterious “matte black triangular shape” in the sky. These witnesses said the object didn’t have any discernable sound and that it stopped to hover before flying away with the speed of a fighter jet.

Documents from both the Department of Defense and the Federal Bureau of Investigation mention the incident. Names of the three individuals are redacted, along with the date and time, and the exact location of the sighting is not included. However, the Defense Department document mentions that the object disappeared into “a canyon drainage,” and “late-dusk illumination” is mentioned.

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump announced that he was instructing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and leaders of relevant agencies to release files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs). The account of the matte black triangle is included in the seventh tranche of these documents released Friday.

“Federal law enforcement agents documented an unidentified craft presenting as a matte black triangular shape of extremely low aspect ratio that was nonreflective under the observed lighting conditions,” said the Defense Department document. “It had an estimated [13-to-15-foot] wingspan, apparent six-to-nine-foot fuselage length, and a maximum vertical thickness of roughly one to two feet. The unidentified craft maintained a completely fixed horizontal alignment with did not tilt, sway, or wobble during the controlled vertical ascent of approximately ten seconds.”

After climbing an estimated 200 to 300 feet above the local ridge line, “the craft instantaneously arrested all vertical motion and entered a stable hover for an estimated twenty seconds,” the document continued. Then, it “reportedly transitioned from a zero-velocity state directly into high-speed horizontal flight, executing a fluid banking maneuver and terrain-hugging descent into a canyon drainage in approximately two to three seconds, with speed the observers described to be as fast as a fighter jet.”

While the speed was estimated to be close to that of a fighter jet, no instrumented speed measurement was obtained. When observed banking, the craft also “appeared to flatten and present as a more triangle,” the Defense Department document said.

Furthermore, the document said the triangle had no “detectable acoustic signature,” typical of aircraft, such as engine roar, and that its “infrared spectrum it displayed a spatially uniform thermal signature across the entire airframe without localized thermal concentrations,” that would be seen with exhaust gradients or other aircraft features. At least two of the agents who saw the shape were positioned at a primary observation post conducting routine observation support.

They both reportedly have extensive operational experience working with conventional aircraft operating around the operation site. According to the Defense Department report, weather conditions were favorable for observation, with a clear line of sight, negligible cloud cover, and a lack of solar glare.

“A residual sunset gradient provided a high-contrast backdrop against the western ridge lines while the deeper valley floors and canyon cuts were rapidly falling into shadow,” the report said. “Primary optical and tripod-mounted sensor systems were initially oriented eastward.”

On the morning after the sighting, a ground survey of the canyon drainage was conducted. No wreckage, ground scarring, or vegetation damage was observed. No physiological effects – like a memory gap or nausea – were reported by the agents who saw the mysterious triangle.

“The 15-foot flying triangle is classified as a UFO-like ‘Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena’ because the U.S. doesn't have the technology to make such a craft – and neither do its adversaries,” Axios noted. Per the outlet, “reports of the drone-like aircraft is of growing interest and concern to intelligence and military officials.”

In 2024, the U.S. government released a report that indicated extraterrestrial life or aliens wasn’t behind the incidents. Even so, poll results from this June show that one in five Americans think that we have already has contact with aliens, who some people believe are the behind UFO and UAP sightings.
