Passengers social posts show evacuation of plane that flipped at Toronto’s airport

A Delta flight from Minneapolis International Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport flipped upside down while landing on Monday, leaving at least 18 people hospitalized.

According to reports, Delta Flight 4819, a CRJ900 aircraft operated by Endeavor Air, crash-landed while touching down in Toronto on Monday. The flight, which was carrying 76 passengers and four crew members, is now being investigated by officials with the Federal Aviation Administration to find out what went wrong.

Of those who were hospitalized, three are said to be critically injured: a child, a woman in her 40s, and a man in his 60s, according to the medical transport organization Ornge.

While the plane was left lying upside down, ablaze, and without its wings, all of those who were on board were safely evacuated, and no fatalities have been reported, Toronto Pearson President and CEO Deborah Flint confirmed with ABC News.

Flint noted that the “heroic and trained professionals” who responded to the incident helped ensure that the situation didn’t worsen.

After the flight crash-landed, several passengers shared photos and videos on social media of the upside-down plane sitting on a snow-covered runway.

Another post showed one passenger crawling out of the upside-down plane while the flight’s crew assisted those to safety, and fire crews drenched the plane in water to ensure the fire wasn’t still going.

“Leave everything,” one flight attendant can be heard saying while standing on the ceiling of the plane.

Someone from the cockpit of another plane also appeared to catch the moment the plane crash-landed and rolled onto its back while bursting into flames.

As the plane landed, the video appears to show its landing gear slipping on the icy runway, but officials have not confirmed what caused the crash as the investigation is still ongoing.

Delta has released a statement on the crash, noting that its “primary focus is taking care of those impacted.”

“The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident at Toronto-Pearson International Airport. I want to express my thanks to the many Delta and Endeavor team members and the first responders on site,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian shared in a statement.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow shared on social media her praise for first responders.

“I’m relieved to learn that all passengers and crew are accounted for after today’s plane crash at Toronto Pearson. Thank you to the first responders, crew and airport staff for their quick actions and commitment to keeping everyone safe.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz shared that he’s also been in touch with Delta.

“Grateful to the first responders and professionals on the scene,” he said on social media.

Operations at the airport have returned to normal, according to a social post from Toronto Pearson, which said, “Passengers flying out today are advised to check the status of their flight before coming to the airport.”
