Oscar-winning actress and director Regina King has lost her 26-year-old son, Ian Alexander Jr., to suicide.
A representative for King confirmed his death to NBC News Saturday.
“Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian. He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others,” King said in a statement provided by the representative.
Alexander, a Los Angeles native, was a musician and DJ who performed under the stage name “desduné,” according to his Instagram page. He released a single called “Green Eyes” on Jan. 7 and in 2020 appeared in One Night in Miami, an Oscar-winning film his mother directed.
He also worked as a chef, according to Flaunt Magazine.
“I definitely consider myself a person that’s for the arts. A lot of different art forms I’m down for, that’s my dharma. I’m a pretty laid-back person, pretty groovy. I listen to a lot of different music. I like to dance so really if I’m having fun and can create art, I’m happy,” he told the outlet in May.
“Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time,” said his mother’s statement.
King 51, has also won a Golden Globe and four Primetime Emmy Awards during her career.
Alexander wrote a heartfelt tribute to his mother on her 50th birthday last year, said NBC News.
“To have you as my mother is the greatest gift I could ask for,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “To be all that you are while always having the time to be there, love and support me unconditionally is truly remarkable.”
