Former President Donald Trump called for former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) to be prosecuted on Sunday, alleging that she purposely withheld information during the Jan. 6 committee’s hearings.
Cheney, who was the chair of the Jan. 6 committee, is just one of the former members being targeted by Trump after a piece was posted in The Federalist last week from former Trump administration aide Kash Patel.
In the piece, Patel claimed that Cheney and the committee “suppressed evidence” about the former President’s authorization of National Guard troops during the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection.
In response to this, Trump took to his social media site, Truth Social, calling for justice.
“SHE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO OUR COUNTRY! SHE ILLEGALLY DESTROYED THE EVIDENCE. UNREAL!!!” Trump wrote.
In a post to X on Sunday, Cheney responded to Trump’s calls for her to be prosecuted, writing that the claims in Patel’s piece are not true.
“Hi Donald: you know these are lies. You have had all the grand jury & J6 transcripts for many months. You’re trying to halt your 1/6 trial because your VP, WH counsel, WH aides, campaign & DOJ officials etc. will testify against you. You’re afraid of the truth and you should be,” Cheney wrote.
After leading the committee and becoming one of the most outspoken GOP critics of Trump, Cheney lost her seat in the house after three terms to Trump-backed challenger Rep. Harriet Hageman.
Despite losing her position in her own party, Cheney has remained adamant in her belief that Trump is to blame for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, claiming that he incited the riot through his actions and inaction.
Currently, Trump is facing four felony charges over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
However, his trial has been delayed while the Supreme Court decides if his actions on Jan. 6 were under presidential immunity.
Trump is arguing in the case that he can’t be prosecuted because he was working as president at the time.
