
Kansas City, MO – A predicted severe storm system blasted into the Kansas City Metro after midnight - early Wednesday morning - bringing very strong winds, driving rain, and preliminary results from the NWS show a EF-1 tornado carved a 14-mile path through the Metro with maximum winds of 100mph.
Video from a street camera captured the blasting wind and rain in Overland Park, highlighting a lightning strike and shows the wind changing directions:
KMBC News 9 Meteorologist Nick Bender says winds above 90mph were measured by doppler radar at 95th and Lamar in Overland Park around 1:20 AM. Lofted debris was detected at this time.
Wednesday morning, utility company Evergy shared that the storm caused more than 75,000 outages in its service area, primarily in the KC Metro. The storm moved slowly through the area and did extensive damage, according to Evergy.
Numerous trees of various sizes were knocked down or ripped apart by the storm.
The winds and rain also caused damage to some businesses and smaller structures.
