KANSAS CITY – President Trump on Monday doubled down on his idea of sending U.S. citizens to foreign prisons.
In speaking with El Salvador's President Bukele, Trump said he wanted to send "homegrown criminals" to his country next. ABC’s Steven Portnoy at the White House joined Wink & Amy today on Kansas City’s Morning News with details. You can listen to the conversation here:
The comments came as Trump welcomed Bukele, a key partner in his migrant deportations, to the White House amid controversy over the Supreme Court saying the administration should "facilitate" the return of a migrant from Maryland wrongfully sent to a notorious Salvadoran mega-prison.
Trump administration officials emphasized that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was sent to a notorious gang prison in El Salvador, was a citizen of that country and that the U.S. has no say in his future.
Bukele was asked if he plans to return Abrego Garcia and he said it was “preposterous.” He called Abrego Garcia “a terrorist” and that he had no power to return Abrego Garcia to the United States.
