“Arthur is the longest-running kids animated series in history and is known for teaching kindness, empathy and inclusion through many groundbreaking moments to generations of viewers,” the show’s executive producer, Carol Greenwald told the outlet in a statement. “In the winter of 2022, the 25th and final season of Arthur will debut. Arthur will continue to be available on PBS Kids for years to come.”

But fans of the bespeckled aardvark and his friends in the fictional town of Elwood City shouldn’t lose all hope of seeing more adventures from the group.

“Producer GBH and PBS Kids are continuing to work together on additional Arthur content, sharing the lessons of Arthur and his friends in new ways,” Greenwald added.

Based on the “Arthur Adventure” book series by Marc Brown, the show premiered in 1996 and has aired more than 240 episodes to date.

Over the years, the show racked up many accolades including four Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Children’s Animated Program and a Peabody Award.

Known for not shying away from prominent social issues, a 2019 episode centered around the gay wedding of third-grade teacher Mr. Ratburn and Patrick the chocolatier.

News of the end of “Arthur” comes six months after PBS Kids announced it would be sunsetting its long-running animated series “Caillou.”

In January, the network disclosed the series was ending its run after 20 years on the air.
