After a three-month hiatus, the fan favorite Mexican Pizza will be making its permanent return to the Taco Bell menu next month, which is quicker than the chain expected.
During the height of the pandemic in November 2020, the item was taken off the menu as Taco Bell restructured to try and cut costs.
After disappearing for two years, the Mexican Pizza returned in May. However, Taco Bell was not expecting the demand it received for the item, and it quickly ran out of product in roughly two weeks.
David Gibbs, the CEO of Yum Brands, Taco Bell's parent company, shared during an analyst call on Wednesday that the Mexican Pizza has allowed the chain to connect with its customers.
"The benefit of things like the Mexican pizza is the connection it has with consumers ... and the halo it provides to the brand," Gibbs said. "It's just as much about the buzz ... and the relevance it creates for our brand as it is about the discrete amount of sales."
Sales for the product were big as Taco Bell sold 20 million Mexican Pizzas nationwide and reported seeing loyalty membership grow by 10%.
But now, the restaurant chain is stocked up and ready to deliver to customers who have called for the Mexican Pizza to return and be made with the same ingredients.
"Taco Bell worked diligently to resolve depleted ingredients and supply chain challenges that originally caused longer gaps in the product's availability," the company said.
The $4.49 item is a flat, crispy tortilla covered with pizza sauce and beans or ground beef that is then topped with another tortilla, more sauce, cheese, and tomatoes. The item was originally introduced in 1985, though under a different name.
While flashy menu items and bringing back fan favorites have been a recent promotion for fast food companies, Taco Bell made clear that the Mexican Pizza's disappearance was not a stunt.
"While [limited time offerings] are core to Taco Bell's ability to churn out menu innovation, that wasn't the plan for the Mexican Pizza," the company said. "Upon its menu return, demand for the Mexican Pizza was seven times higher than when previously available."
