Over the last 10 years, the Indianapolis Colts have gone through a ton of ups and downs. Their superstar QB Andrew Luck had them competing for a title for years, but retired before he was even 30 years old, which set in a series of unfortunate events over the last five seasons.
The team has never recovered from Luck’s sudden and unexpected retirement, going through signal-callers like a drive-thru window. You can put head coaches in that same category as well; stability hasn’t been the story for Indy.
However, one thing has remained a constant for nearly a decade: the Colts simply have not started a season off on the right foot. Since 2014, the team has gone an incredible 0-9-1 in that span in opening Week 1 games. Even looking past the last 10 years, they are 1-14-1 over the last 16 since 2008.
Remember, they had Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck for a majority of those seasons, and still couldn’t win their opening games.
Indianapolis believes that they have the head coach and QB of the future that can lead them back to greatness in Shane Steichen and Anthony Richardson. The latter unfortunately had a season-ending injury last year in his rookie season, but before he had to exit, he showed great potential. Steichen managed to keep the team together enough to give them a shot at a playoff berth last year, but ultimately they came up just short.
So, will they have any more luck this weekend when they open their season at home against the Houston Texans? The oddsmakers don’t think they will win, as Indy is a 2.5 point underdog. Still, that spread is very small considering the amount of public love that the Texans are receiving after their 2023 season.
According to BetMGM’s John Ewing, 78% of tickets are on the Texans -2.5 at their sportsbook to cover and win against Indy. That isn’t shocking at all with the public interpretation of these two franchises right now. They have moved to +3 there, and at that number, I would probably bet the Colts at home.
I’ll be very interested to see where the money goes through the week until we get to Sunday, where the favorite typically generates money in the market.
