Chiefs' Dominance in Season Openers Under Andy Reid: Can They Cover Against Baltimore in Week 1?

Kansas City's Impressive Track Record Faces a New Challenge from Lamar Jackson and the Ravens

Getting off to a winning start in the NFL can be incredibly important for any team, and no one has done it better than the Chiefs over the last decade. Kansas City has been the NFL’s darling ever since QB Patrick Mahomes first laced them up at QB for the team. The amount of success they have had over the last five years has been unprecedented, something we haven’t seen since the early ‘00s when a young signal-caller named Tom Brady stepped onto the field.

However, while Mahomes has certainly upgraded this team to Super Bowl winning status, the Chiefs were good even before he arrived there. Much of their success can also be attributed to head coach Andy Reid, who has been lights out at getting his team prepped and ready for season openers.

Under Reid, Kansas City is 9-1 straight up (SU) and 7-3 against the spread (ATS) in their season opening games over the last 10 years. That one loss came just last season to the Detroit Lions, who went into Arrowhead and defeated them as underdogs.

Now, that task will be laid at the feet of QB Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. Right now, you can get Baltimore at +3 on BetMGM for a -115 price tag. Interestingly, only 46% of bets are on the Ravens spread, but 57% of the money is on that side. On the moneyline, MGM has 61% of bets and 58% of money on Baltimore as well.

I’ll be very curious to see where the money and tickets go throughout the week on this game, and typically, money starts to come in on the favorite as we get closer to kickoff. Plus, the public generally loves to bet on the Chiefs, and why would they not with the amount of success they have had in these games under Reid?
