The Orlando Magic (17-9) are off to a great start in 2024-25 despite the fact that Paolo Banchero has only played five games this season. They haven’t needed their best scorer to climb to third in the Eastern Conference and boast the league’s top scoring defense. However, a recent injury suffered by Franz Wagner could significantly impact Orlando’s future. The Magic wing is out indefinitely with a torn right oblique, which is the same ailment that’s kept Banchero out since the end of October. Looking to adjust your expectations for the Magic? Here’s how you should approach betting them moving forward.

Southeast Division Insights

Orlando is favored to win its division at -200 on BetMGM and their only real competition appears to be the Miami Heat (12-10). The Magic’s three-game lead over the only other legitimate divisional contender isn’t much and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the the Heat creep back into the conversation while the leaders figure out how to keep winning without their two best players. Banchero is just starting on-court activities in preparation for his return, but the Magic will face the Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, and New York Knicks in their next five games. That being said, bettors should stay away from wagering on Orlando winning the division for now. There will be more value when Banchero gets back in the mix and -200 odds are too steep given the team’s current health situation.

Playoffs & Play-In Tournament Odds

Some sportsbooks have removed the Magic’s odds to make the playoffs or play-in tournament in the aftermath of recent events, but they’re still firmly expected to be a part of the postseason. Their playoff odds are -5000 while their play-in odds are -650 at DraftKings. There’s no reason to think such a well-coached team won’t be among the Eastern Conference’s 10 best teams by the end of the regular season, especially after getting off to such a great start. A Play-In Tournament wager might be worth it down the road, but bettors should wait to see what the on-court product looks like when Banchero shakes off the rust and plays without Wagner first.
