It’s October, which means, in the coming days and weeks, you’ll see plenty of raucous clubhouse celebrations across baseball. The unbridled joy of grown men dousing each other in champagne is a fall traditional like no other, though, between the smell of soggy, booze-soaked uniforms and drenched carpet ruined by rivers of spilled Budweiser, it can’t make for a very hygienic experience. But even by MLB clubhouse standards, what manager Dusty Baker did after the Astros’ clinching win Thursday night, sipping champagne out of a literal shoe in recognition of Houston’s fourth division title in five years, was miles from sanitary.
Good god man, have you no shame?
Anyone who’s seen the movie Beerfest is familiar with the concept of drinking out of glass boots, but putting your lips around an Adidas baseball cleat would be a bridge too far for most. Luckily, Baker’s clubhouse shenanigans, however ill-advised, were a big hit with his players, who encouraged the 72-year-old to go for it.
It might take a Listerine rinse (or several) for Baker to get the taste of shoe out of his mouth, but at least no one got hurt. Brewers bullpen fixture Devin Williams wasn’t as fortunate, becoming a cautionary tale after having a few too many celebrating Milwaukee’s playoff berth earlier this week. The National League’s reigning Rookie of the Year broke his right (pitching) hand punching a wall, an injury that will cost him the remainder of 2021.

Baker’s Astros will face the AL Central champion White Sox in the American League Division Series next week.
