One of the most popular video games of all time could soon be returning in some form.
Michael Straw of Sports Gamers Online reports that EA Sports is developing a new baseball game:
It’s been 14 years, but EA Sports is making a return to the baseball video game market. SGO has learned that the company is working on a new next-gen baseball video game unrelated to the recently acquired Metalhead Software and Super Mega Baseball.
No platforms were specifically mentioned. However, the game is being developed by EA Vancouver, the same studio that handles other EA Sports properties like the NHL, UFC, and FIFA franchises.
EA Sports released it's first Major League Baseball game in 1996, using the title "Triple Play Baseball" for games released ahead of the 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 seasons. From 2003 to 2005, the game was titled "MVP Baseball," with the 2005 version of the game with Manny Ramirez on the cover serving as the most popular installment.
In 2006, EA Sports lost its licensing agreement with Major League Baseball, which is why there wasn't a successor to the wildly popular 2005 game. However, EA Sports executive Cam Weber did acknowledge in 2018 that the company was interested in developing a baseball game again at some point.
When exactly that point will be is unclear, though a source did estimate to Straw that 2024 could be a year to watch. One thing is for sure: Tessie better be in the soundtrack.
