If you are from the northeast like myself, you've heard countless stories of people claiming certain buildings are "haunted" or that they supposedly saw a ghost wonder certain areas. Most of the time people dismiss it as a joke.
Former Red Sox catcher Jarred Saltalamacchia made an appearance on The Bradfo Sho Monday and told the guys about the time he got up close and personal with two ghosts during his stay at The Vinoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, Fla., a place many big leaguers have claimed to be haunted.
Rob Bradford kicked off the conversation by recalling a funny story of Sox players doing cannonballs off a cliff into the pool at the Vinoy, despite the pool only being five feet deep. That led to an even more intriguing conversation on Saltalamacchia encountering multiple ghosts during one of his stays at the haunted hotel in 2013.
"I've seen two ghosts there, Saltalamacchia said, much to the amusement of Bradford and Coop. "So the one time it was the woman in the white dress who walks down the hallways, we had got in late one night, 2 am from New York probably because we were out late. I saw that as I was going to the room. The other time was I was laying in bed, I locked the door, deadbolt and sometime in the morning 2-3 in the morning I wake up and the deadbolt was open and the door was open. What the hell."
The 11-year big-league vet said he got up, closed the door, and when he went back to his bed to lay down, he saw a shadow of a man with a top hat, while standing next to a little boy.
"I look into the window and I can see a shadow of two people, a little boy and a guy in a top hat, just standing in front of the window. It was just their shadow it wasn't like a full on picture of em and I was just like, "alright" turned back over, went to bed and pretended that wasn't there."
At least Salty claims the ghost seemed rather nice.
"I just go with that their friendly ghosts, they didn't say anything, they didn't talk to me so."
Bradford explains that the story goes back to a story from former Sox relief pitcher Scott Williamson who said similar things to Salty, even mentioning the same top hat ghost.
The Vinoy was built in 1925, meaning that it has endured nearly 100 years of fortunate and unfortunate events. Not to mention that any building that is that old usually gives people who believe in the supernatural a cause to pause.
Even some of the current all-star talents in today's game like Bryce Harper, Adrian Beltre, and Giancarlo Stanton have been disturbed by ghosts, with each player ending up paying for a room in a different hotel.
Baseball players lose enough sleep traveling the country for 81 games a year, add in ghosts that unlock your doors and appear out of nowhere, that can only add to the stress of being a major league ballplayer.
