Former MVP Vladimir Guerrero—not to be confused with his son, Blue Jays All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr.—hasn’t logged a major-league at-bat in over a decade. But the Hall-of-Fame outfielder is still hitting bombs, albeit in a much lower-stakes setting. Here’s video of the 47-year-old launching a towering home run while playing slow-pitch softball, presumably back home in his native Dominican Republic.
Guerrero, a shameless free-swinger and one of the most entertaining players in the sport over his 16 MLB seasons, waited a full five seconds to start running, admiring his titanic blast to deep left field before finally taking his victory lap around the bases. Upon closer examination, Vlad Sr. would appear to be sporting the iconic No. 27 Expos jersey he wore throughout his eight-year tenure in Montreal from 1996-2003, compiling 234 home runs (second-most in franchise history) in that span. Guerrero, who famously eschews batting gloves, was greeted by a sea of high-fives from teammates, and even a few opponents, as he rounded third base.

It’s hard not to feel nostalgic watching this, longing for the days of yore when Guerrero would amaze with his rocket throwing arm and sweet right-handed stroke. Dominant as “The Impaler” was during his Expos heyday, one could easily envision Vlad Jr. surpassing him, with the Blue Jays slugger already bettering his dad’s career-high in home runs with a league-best 48 round-trippers last season.
