(KMOX) - Watching Adam Wainwright pitch in what may be the final year of his MLB career has become must-watch baseball for not just St. Louis Cardinals fans, but baseball fans everywhere.

The 39-year-old pitched a complete-game shutout on Wednesday night in a 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He needed only 88 pitches to do it and also complete a rare "Maddux." The single-game feat named after Hall of Famer Greg Maddux is when a pitcher completes a shutout with fewer than 100 pitches.

Oh, and Waino had two hits, including a double, and an RBI last night.

Just to help you understand how rare his night was:

• It was the first Cardinals "Maddux" since Chris Carpenter did it in September 2011 on 97 pitches.
• He's the oldest pitcher to throw a shutout on 88 pitches or fewer since pitches have been counted (which began in 1988).
• He's the second-oldest pitcher (turning 40 on Aug. 30) to complete a "Maddux." Only Jamie Moyer was older, who did it in 2006 at age 43.
• His 88 pitches are the second-fewest in a nine-inning Cardinals shutout since pitches have been counted.
• He's the first Cardinals pitcher to throw a "Maddux" and collect two hits in the same game.

He was asked if that last fact should be called a "Wainwright?"

"You said it, not me," Wainwright said.
