Baseball is back, which means so are Rob Friedman’s pitching GIFs. Check out this doozy from Friday’s Grapefruit League action in Bradenton with Yankees pitcher Hayden Wesneski freezing Mason Martin on a knee-buckling, “frisbee” slider.
Poor guy. Martin never had a prayer against this 82-mph filth. Wesneski looked sharp against the Pirates, scattering two hits and one run (Cole Tucker led off the third with a solo blast to deep center) over three dominant innings. A former sixth-round pick out of Sam Houston State, the 6’3” right-hander impressed in the minors last season, limiting opponents to a .229 average with 151 strikeouts over 25 outings (24 starts) for High-A Hudson Valley, Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Rated 15th in the organization according to MLB’s latest prospect rankings, Martin should debut in the majors later this year. While Friday’s lineup was mostly composed of non-roster invitees, the Yankees did sprinkle in a few regulars with Gleyber Torres, Joey Gallo and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (acquired from the Twins earlier this week) each logging three plate appearances.
