The 49ers coaching staff has seen a lot of poaching going on this offseason.

Former offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel was hired as the Miami Dolphins' new head coach. On his way out, McDaniel took both Jon Embree and Wes Welker with him to the sunshine state.

On Friday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello is joining them, not on the dolphins, but in the college ranks as the Kentucky Wildcats' new offensive coordinator.

This is the second time that Scangarello is leaving the Niners. The move may not be that much of a loss considering the production that they got out of both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance this season.

Scangrello is replacing the Sean McVay disciple Liam Coen who is headed back to the Rams as the offensive coordinator after one year with the Wildcats. Scangrello has a connection to McVay and Coen due to Kyle Shanahan's relationship with McVay.

The former 49ers QB coach joined the team last year after having coached in the same role from 2017-18. He spent one year as the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator in 2019. He also made NFL stops with the Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles.

With Scangarello's departure, that means there have been eight coaches that have left the bay for other opportunities.

What this means former No.3 overall pick Trey Lance remains unknown, but will certainly be interesting to track once the Niners find a replacement for Scangarello.
