According to several reports, the attorney representing a man who claimed former Pitt star and NFL Pro Bowler Aaron Donald assaulted him is apologizing.
Attorney Todd Hollis tells the Tribune Review, as well as several other outlets, that after reviewing a video that showed the altercation, it was clear that Donald was not the aggressor toward victim DeVincent Spriggs, but instead tried to break up the melee.
Hollis tells the Trib they still want to find out who is responsible for the attack.
“I made it clear to my client that our goal was justice,” he said. “And that doesn’t include holding someone responsible who you know is not responsible. So as soon as I verified that Mr. Donald was not involved in the altercation, I made it clear that we needed to get that information out,” Hollis told the Tribune Review.
Hollis also told the Trib that a member of his staff found an extended video and he believes the one made public was “cut or spliced.”
On Friday morning, attorney Casey White, representing Donald told The Fan Morning Show that it was in fact Donald who saved Spriggs from a further beating after the victim apparently swung a bottle at the NFL star, who ducked and was bruised on the top of his head.
After that, several people pulled Donald away, while others jumped on Spriggs.
White says that the beating could’ve been far worse if it wasn’t for Donald’s intervention.
“Mr. Spriggs should write a thank you card to Aaron Donald,” said White.
White claims the incident started inside a private residence during an early morning party last Sunday where Spriggs was aggressive toward Donald.
Spriggs was removed from the residence but stayed outside until Donald and his crew appeared on Wrights Way in the South Side.
White also said he was contacted by Pittsburgh Police on Friday who told him:
“I agree thus far that there is no evidence from that video that shows Donald assaulting the victim.”
Spriggs suffered a concussion, an arm injury and significant injuries to his face.
