Pretty much every NFL team has been in a situation where they're just one piece away from reaching the level they need to be at for a legitimate shot at a Super Bowl ring.
And as the old saying goes, all a team in that position really needs to reach that Super Bowl tier is a quarterback who led the league in interceptions and sacks taken and led his squad to a 3-8-1 record the season prior... oh, that's not the expression? That's just how former Pro Bowl linebacker and current ESPN personality Bart Scott views the Chicago Bears current situation.
"I mean I know Wentz [didn't have] the best season last year, but come on... Mitchell Trubisky?" Scott said on ESPN's "Get Up!" on Monday morning. "This is great upgrade. You think about what he was. He's a guy that was sacked 50 times. We saw Patrick Mahomes become a mere mortal when he didn't have protection, but that's exactly what Carson Wentz had to endure in Philadelphia.
"This is a team that got old, went all in for a championship. They won the championship and everyone around him got old... I mean he's trying to throw to DeSean Jackson who's like a Ferrari — yea, it's beautiful, but the check engine light is always on. So, you think about, if he goes to Chicago, that makes Chicago, I believe, a Super Bowl contender."
I'm right there with you, Mike Greenberg. Should Carson Wentz look like his 2017 self, then yes, you'd think he can make any team look like a Super Bowl contender. But why should we believe that's the case when he was downright awful in 2020? Like, awful as in potentially the single worst quarterback the league had to offer?
But there are those, if Scott's opinion is any indication, that truly believe he could lead to a huge turnaround in Chicago. Time continues to tick away on a deal coming to fruition after we initially heard that it would be happening any day a couple of weeks back.
Will the Bears pull the trigger and become "Super Bowl contenders" again?
